Healthy Workforce » Healthy Workplace Culture » Healthier Bottom-Line

Your bottom line is in their hands. Could their health be in yours?

The wellbeing of your employees is a responsibility that is seldom taken lightly once sick days begin to mount up. At this point the cost to a business is obvious. But how much has it been costing you in productivity before an individual says "I feel too ill to come in today", or "My doctor has signed me off for a week….2 weeks….a month." And how much of this is down to "stress"? Apart from duty-of-care considerations, there are a host of reasons why employers should take steps to tackle stress.

More Hard Facts to Swallow:

  • It is estimated that 50,000 strokes could be prevented each year if people had their blood pressure checked regularly.
  • Raised blood cholesterol is a factor in nearly half of all coronary heart disease cases.
  • Individuals who are overweight have a 50-100% increased risk of premature death from all causes, compared to individuals with a healthy weight.
  • Approximately 1.4m people in the UK alone have been diagnosed with Diabetes. Even more crucial, an equal number are estimated to have diabetes but are unaware of it.

How do these facts affect you as an employer/manager?

Because STRESS could play a serious role in increasing the risk factor for all of the above among your workforce!

One in five people suffers from workplace stress, with half a million people reporting they have become ill as a result*. Though a degree of pressure can help you to perform effectively, excessive demands can reduce your productivity and make it more difficult to take important decisions. Consequently, leaving stress unchecked can escalate costs for an organisation. Not only does it have implications for productivity, attendance and staff turnover but, if allowed to run rampant, it can also result in legal action, with the potential for uncapped settlements and damage to an employer's reputation. After all, employers have a legal responsibility to ensure your employees don't become ill, either physically or mentally, because of work-related stress.

The scale of the problem is demonstrated by the Health and Safety Executive's (HSE) 2006/07 survey of Self-Reported Work-Related illness, which revealed that 13.8m working days were lost to self-reported work-related stress, depression and anxiety. And that each case of work-related stress, depression or anxiety-related ill health led to an average of 30.2 working days lost. The HSE also estimated that the cost to the UK economy tipped more than £530m.

Are your "stress" alarm bells ringing? Are you handling it?

How well tuned in are employers to the "stress" warning signs? How many CEOs, managers and HR directors are actively putting measures into place to safeguard the health of their workforce - or their own health?

Recognise the warning signs. Stress doesn't discriminate between the office junior and your top talent. It can impact anyone at anytime. Its effects can manifest as always being late, an unexpected angry outburst, failure to hit deadlines, through to depression, uncontrolled tears and nervous breakdown. Evidence also exists that stress can lead to weight gain AND increase risk factors for chronic degenerative conditions, including cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

Don't let this happen to you or anyone in your organisation!

Tackling work-related stress is essential to ensure the wellbeing of both you and your employees and to safeguard the performance of your business.
